Physical Characteristics
- The largest living pigeon in the world, measuring up to 16 inches long
- Weighs over 1 pound with a wingspan of 21-23 inches
- Features a distinctive "mane" of hairlike feathers around the neck
- Iridescent metallic blue-green and copper plumage
- Grey head with a striking pure white tail
- Dark bill with a small blackish knob and dull red legs
Habitat & Distribution
- Found on small islands from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the Solomon Islands and Palau
- Inhabits rainforests, dry forests, mangroves, and shrubland
- Prefers uninhabited offshore islands for roosting
- Ranges across Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines
Behavior & Diet
- Highly nomadic, traveling in flocks between islands
- Flies in distinctive columns or single file formation
- Most active at dawn and dusk
- Feeds on seeds, fruits, and buds from the forest floor
- Uses a gizzard stone to grind hard food items
- Communicates with low-pitched repetitive calls and harsh guttural croaks

- Classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List
- Closest living relative to the extinct dodo and Rodrigues solitaire
- Threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and pet trade
- Breeds from January to March, monogamous for life
- Only living member of the genus Caloenas
