Conservation
The Nicobar Pigeon is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. Population pressure comes from three directions: habitat loss as offshore forest is cleared, hunting for meat and the gizzard stones used in some traditional medicines, and capture for the cage-bird trade because of the striking iridescent plumage.
Effective protection means keeping the small, uninhabited roosting islands genuinely uninhabited — even occasional human presence is enough to flush flocks and depress breeding success. International trade is restricted under CITES Appendix I.
What the state tree looks like here
Both this page and the overview are static children of the same layout, so the captured tree differs only in the leaf segment: "__PAGE__" at /router-state vs the static string "conservation" wrapping a "__PAGE__" leaf here.
